Thomas Mark Plaza

Thomas Mark Plaza, 67 of Sioux City, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at his home comforted by family.  Abiding by family wishes, cremation has taken place and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. 

 

Tom was born on October 11, 1954 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to John and Olga Marie (Melichar) Plaza.  He received his education at LaSalle High School in Cedar Rapids and continued his studies at the University of Northern Iowa, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree, with high honors, in Business in 1976.  He finished his studies at the University of Iowa College of Law, graduating in 1979 with high honors with a Juris Doctor. 

 

Tom married Glenda Matthiesen in Andover, Iowa in 1977.  The couple moved to Sioux City in 1979 when Tom joined the Heidman Law Firm, where he later became a partner.  Tom was a member of the American, Iowa State, Nebraska State, and Woodbury County Bars and also a member of the Defense Research Institute.  He was a past board member of the Iowa Association of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers and served on the Board of Governors.  He was a member of the Civil Service Commission of the City of Sioux City, Iowa and served as Chairperson. 


Tom was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and a voracious reader of history, particularly of European history.  He collected Sioux City historical memorabilia and was involved in the Siouxland Historical Railroad Association.  After his retirement, he volunteered at the Sioux City Museum and at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland. 

 

Tom is survived by his wife Glenda; daughter Tome (Andrew) Hope and their children Owen, Jacob, and Henry; daughter Celina (Garrett Fletcher) Plaza; and niece Michelle Skulley.

 

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and brother John Plaza. 

 

Tom was a man with a big presence and a big heart; he will be missed.
