Reverend Charles Horkey

Reverend Charles E. Horkey, 70, of North Sioux City, SD, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022, at a Sioux City Hospital following a brief illness with Covid complications. Rev. Horkey had been vaccinated.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux City, IA. The Rev. Dr. Steve Turner, President of Iowa District West, and Rev. James Travis, Circuit Visitor, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at St. John Lutheran Cemetery - Belford Township, Hankinson, ND. Rev. Horkey was born January 16, 1951, in Windom, MN. He was the son of Gordon and Edna (Karo) Horkey. Rev. Horkey grew up on the farm near Windom and attended Windom Public Schools, graduating in 1969. After farming with his father for a number of years, he entered Concordia College in St. Paul, MN, in 1976, graduating in May of 1980. While attending CSP he met, and later married, Marsha Pankow of Hankinson, ND. They were married on June 30, 1978, in Hankinson, ND. Rev. Horkey enrolled at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in 1980.  His year of vicarage internship was spent in Michigan at Holy Cross Lutheran Church-Belding and Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church-Greenville. He graduated from Concordia Seminary in 1984 and accepted his first divine call to the dual parish of Immanuel-Schuyler and Trinity-Howells of Nebraska. While in the Nebraska District, he also served at Immanuel, Tilden (1987-1998); as the development director and chaplain for Lutheran High Northeast (1998-1999); and at Hope Lutheran Church, South Sioux City (1999-2007).  In 2007 he accepted a call to the dual parish of St. John, Monson and Immanuel Lutheran of Wheaton, MN. In 2011, Rev. Horkey retired from full time ministry, returning to live in South Sioux City. In retirement, he served as a vacancy pastor for Holy Cross-Dakota Dunes, Hope-South Sioux City, Shepherd of Peace-Sergeant Bluff, Concordia-Sioux City, and Faith-Sioux City. While serving at Faith, the congregation extended a divine call to Pastor Horkey to serve in a half-time position. In March of 2015 he also accepted an invitation to serve as the Voice of The Good Shepherd Hour, a Sunday morning broadcast on four radio stations in Northwest Iowa, including KSCJ in Sioux City, a position he held for nearly 7 years.

Rev. Horkey is survived by his wife Marsha of North Sioux City, SD; his daughter, Anna Kobs, who lives in St. Louis with her husband Rev. Matthew Kobs and their son Hunter; his daughter, Jane Kreber, who lives in Omaha with her husband Matthew Kreber; his brothers Ricky Horkey (June) of Merrill, WI and Ronald Horkey (Angie) of Westbrook, MN; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and Godchildren.

Rev. Horkey was preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Edna; his sister, Linda Kyes, and her husband, Michael Kyes; his brother, Cicero Horkey; and brother-in-law, David Pankow.
