Gary was born on November 30, 1958 to Arnold and Lois (Christensen) Maly in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was raised in Lincoln and graduated from Pius X High School in 1977.  After graduation, he served in the Marine Corps from 1977-1982. He trained in communication electronics at Twentynine Palms, CA.  Following his service, Gary attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he completed prerequisite course work for the Doctor of Pharmacy degree completed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy in 1987.

He married Carolyn (Franklin) in October of 1986 in Lincoln and moved to Sioux City shortly after where he began his professional career as a pharmacist at Marian Health Center. He later joined the pharmacy staff of the iconic Soo Thrifty, transitioning to Thompson Dean Drug in 2000 as head pharmacist and assumed ownership of the business in 2005, where he worked until his death.  Gary was grateful for his devoted, loyal and hardworking team at the pharmacy and would often remark that the business would not run without them. He was an active member of Business Leaders, the Iowa Pharmacy Association and sat on the board of MercyOne Siouxland Foundation. Gary was a supporter of Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools.

Gary was a proud and devoted father of five children and three grandchildren. Family was everything to him.  He never missed a chance to attend a sporting event, band concert, or any other activity of his kids. He enjoyed taking his family to Lake Okoboji every summer with a beloved group of family friends.  Gary’s favorite day was Sunday when the family would gather at the house for Sunday dinner where he often orchestrated a masterful meal on the grill.

He was a loyal friend, maintaining countless cherished friendships, some that spanned more than 50 years. Gary was known for his quick wit and humor.  He was always available to lend a hand or ear when a friend was in need. Always a Cornhusker, he enjoyed up and downs of being a Nebraska football fan.

Gary is survived by his wife of 33 years, Carolyn; sons Aaron and William (Taylor and granddaughter Ophelia) of Sioux City; daughters Hannah (Chris and grandchildren Olive and Nico) of Littleton, Colorado, Kathleen and Teresa of Sioux City; his mother Lois, brother Roger, and sisters Kathy and Cindy, numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his father Arnold, and sister Terri.

The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider a donation to Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, the June E. Nylen Cancer Center, or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in his name.
