David William "Dave" Gill

February 22, 1940 — March 12, 2022

David William “Dave” Gill, 82 of Sioux City, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2022 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Jackson, Nebraska with Father Paul Albenesius, Father Dave Liewer, and Father Andrew Sohm Concelebrating.  Burial will follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery in rural Jackson.  Visitation, with the family present, will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17th at the church, with a Rosary Service beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com

Dave was born on February 22, 1940 in Jackson, Nebraska to James H. and Mary L. (Merchant) Gill.  He was raised in Jackson, Nebraska, and graduated from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School with the Class of 1958 in Sioux City, Iowa.  While in school, Dave boxed in the Golden Gloves of America, and won the title in 1957 and 1958, and boxed for Engels Boxing.  Dave married Connie Hollister in Elk Point, South Dakota in 1958 and the couple made their home in South Sioux City where they raised their family of three boys and a girl.   He continued his education in a trade school before joining the W.A. Klinger Company, where he was a carpenter for over 40 years, retiring in 2002.  He was a member of the Carpenter Union Local 948 for 62 years. 

Dave’s 20-year marriage to Connie ended in divorce, and he enjoyed his companionship with special friend Donna McCardle until her passing in February of 2014.  While in South Sioux City, Dave enjoyed his membership at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, deer hunting, fishing, and mushroom hunting.  He found his greatest joy in spending time with his family and looked forward to precious family gatherings. Dave left South Sioux City after Donna died, and moved to Sioux City until his time of passing. 

Dave is survived by his son David J. (Chris) Gill of Sioux City, Iowa; son Russell (Shelly) Gill of Waterbury, Nebraska; daughter Traci A. (Brian) Kruk of Omaha, Nebraska; and son Robbie D. (Devilin) Gill of South Sioux City, Nebraska; grandchildren Cory Petersen, Mindy Warns, Tyler Gill, Cody Gill, Tristan Gill, Trisha Boltjes, and Michael Jackson; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers Jack Gill, Mike (Joyce) Gill, Joe (Millie) Gill, and Leonard (Burt) Gill; sister Rose (Earl) Murphy ; many nieces and nephews.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, sister Florence (Leonard) Branch, sister Patricia (Don) Bateman, sister Mary Ann (Gene) Mahon, brother Donald Gill, brother Harold Gill, sisters-in-law Margaret (Olson) Gill, and Evelyn (Chase) Gill; and four nieces and nephews.
