Daniel E. Duling

October 24, 1954 — May 29, 2022

Daniel Edward Duling, 67, of Sioux City, Iowa and Naples, Florida passed away May 29, 2022 after a brief illness. Danny, as he was called by family and friends, was born October 24, 1954 to Dr. Edward and Darlene (Barcal) Duling. He was the third of four children. Dr. Duling was the founder of Duling Optical, a midwestern chain of optical stores, which revolutionized the retail optical industry.

Danny graduated from West High School in Sioux City of 1973. In 1977 Danny graduated with his degree in Ag Management from Iowa State University.

Throughout his life he was a gardener, a farmer, a cattleman, and a rancher. He was a very studied outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. But, above all, Danny was a sensitive, talented and very creative artist. He made a living creating signs, posters, and placards for businesses, schools, charities, organizations and friends through Northwest Iowa and South Dakota.

Danny’s artistic endeavors were obvious whether he picked up a paintbrush, a power tool or a shovel. People would gather around Danny on the beaches of Naples as he created larger than life intricate sand sculptures of winged dragons or magical mermaids. He was humble and quiet in all of the endeavors in which he participated and excelled.

Danny’s greatest passion was his family. When he traveled across the US to visit them, he would bring homemade venison jerky and Bing bars, a family favorite treat.

Danny was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Dr. Edward and Darlene Duling. He also was preceded by an older brother, Kevin, to whom Danny was dedicated.

Danny leaves behind a heartbroken and adoring family: A sister, Lesley Russell (Chris) of Phoenix, Arizona. A nephew, Bowman Russell of Phoenix, Arizona. A niece, Allison Gloyd (Matt) of Scottsdale, Arizona. Danny leaves Allison and Matt’s 3 children of Mason, Reagan and Russell. Danny’s family and friends lost an angel upon his passing and his return home to Doc, Dar, and Kevy.

Cremation rites have been accorded and no services are planned.  Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel assisted with arrangements.
