Alex was born in Sioux City, Iowa on September 17, 1937, the son of Albert and Dorothy (Doohen) Knepper. He was a life-long resident of Sioux City. Alex married Marian Dam on November 16, 1956. They raised four children.

Alex was self-employed and established Alex Knepper Drywall. He was a perfectionist when it came to his craft and was widely considered "the best in the business." Alex enjoyed many hobbies including woodworking, collecting antiques and restoring old watches. Alex loved coaching and playing fast-pitch softball as well as coaching his sons' Little League baseball and basketball teams. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed watching games with his family. Most of all, Alex cherished his relationship with Jesus Christ, as a devout and evangelical Christian. He spent many hours in study and prayer. His vast knowledge of the Bible enabled him to share his faith freely with those he encountered. He often told others "Jesus loves you and wants to spend time with you." Alex lead others in bible studies, confirmation classes and was a prayer warrior at his church. He was very active with Via de Cristo.

Alex is survived by his wife and four children, Kevin (Barbie) Knepper, Brad (Bridget) Knepper, Cindy (Bill) Davis and Paul (Jaime) Knepper, all living in Sioux City. Alex deeply loved and was especially proud of his nine grandchildren, Nicholas Knepper, Cameron Knepper, Quin Knepper, Brendan Knepper, Laura (Knepper) Stevenson, Nathan Davis, Kate Knepper, Ashton Knepper, and Mikayla (Davis) Carson and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Joe, sister, Nancy and infant daughter, Lisa Marie.
