SIOUX CITY | Marvin D. Schafer, 83, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at a local hospital following a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Very Rev. Armand J. Bertrand officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Online condolences may be made at www.meyerbroschapels.com. Marv was born on July 23, 1929, the son of Matt and Martha (VanDenberg) Schafer. He married Mary Catherine "Pat" Lilly on Feb. 28, 1949. To this union, six children were born. Marv worked as a foreman for Jordan Millwork for more than 30 years before retiring when the company closed. In earlier years, Marv enjoyed bowling on a league and coaching Little League. He loved to garden and woodwork, and was an avid golfer, hitting multiple holes in one. He also was a huge Notre Dame and Heelan fan, and enjoyed beating his grandsons at Fantasy Football. Marv was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church for 55 years, and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for three years. Survivors include his wife Mary C. "Pat" Schafer of Sioux City; five children, Cathy (Rich) Stokes of Sioux City, Janet Anderson of Sioux City, Virginia "Ginger" Dunn of Humble, Texas, Jim (Kerry) Schafer of Atlanta, Ga., and Patty (Russ) McKeever of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Darlene (Charlie) Limoges; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Barbara Jo.
