William R. “Bill” Kelly, 76, of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023, at a local hospital.
Services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Bill was born November 8, 1947, in Sioux City, the son of John and Selma (Mettet) Kelly. He graduated from Central High School. Bill was a veteran of the United States Navy, being honorably discharged in 1965. He worked for Jolly Time Popcorn for 38 years, retiring in November of 2012.
Bill married Mary E. Wiese on September 8, 1973, in Sioux City. Bill and Mary enjoyed 47 years of marriage prior to Mary’s death on July 27, 2020. The couple were inseparable and enjoyed many common interests that included traveling, gift giving, the musical group Brule, going out to eat, attending South Bottoms, Hawkeye Club, and Senior Center events. Their dogs: Bridget, Ginger, Susie, and Abbey, were their pride and joy.
Bill had a kind, giving, and appreciative heart. He was especially proud of his sobriety for 40 years since May 21, 1983. Bill enjoyed playing cards, the Chicago Bears and New York Yankees, 1960s music, writing poems, and surprising people with popcorn packages.
Survivors include his brother Jack Mahnke, Sioux City; niece, Jamie (Chris) Zyzda, Sioux City and their children: Rylie and Nate; niece, Lori (Brandon) Willis, Denver, CO and their child: Quinn; nephew, Ryan Mahnke, Omaha, NE and his children: Landon and Carson; and his beloved dog Abbey.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Mary, parents John and Selma Kelly, parents-in-law William and Hildred Wiese, sister-in-law Linda Mahnke, and lifetime friend Mike Nowlen.
