William L. Griencewic

February 27, 1942 — November 29, 2025

Sioux City, Iowa

William L. (Bill) Griencewic, 83, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on November 29, 2025.

Visitation will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on December 6 at 9:00 followed by the Rosary at 9:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 with committal immediately following at Calvary Cemetery.

Born on February 27, 1942, in Sioux City to William Griencewic and Genevieve Laferriere, Bill grew up with strong Midwestern roots. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1960, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota, and later completed his master’s degree at Boston University. While at USD, he was an active member of ROTC, a commitment that shaped the course of his life.

Bill met the love of his life, Judy, while in high school, and the two married on November 30, 1963 after Judy completed nurses training. Together they built a marriage of 62 years, marked by devotion, laughter, and resilience.

Following graduation, Bill joined the full-time Army Reserve and commenced active duty in 1965. His military roles in security and intelligence took him across the country—Baltimore, Maryland; Columbus, Georgia; Kansas City, Missouri; El Paso, Texas—and overseas, with tours in Vietnam, Korea, and Germany. His service reflected his deep sense of duty and patriotism.

In 1976, Bill and his family returned to Sioux City, where he began a long career with Job Service of Iowa, serving from 1978 until his retirement in 2004. Retirement did not slow him down—and for a third act, Bill found joy in driving long-distance buses. His favorite bus driving gig was for the Briar Cliff College softball team.

Bill’s engaging sense of humor and wide-ranging interests enriched the lives of those around him. Over the years, he enjoyed bowling, stamp and coin collecting, golfing, woodworking, genealogy, photography, and working puzzles.

He leaves behind his beloved wife Judy; four children, Christine (Jerry), Bob, Lori (Brian), Erin (Colton), and six grandchildren, Anna Ellis (Pick), Evan Griencewic, Garrett Rogers, Desirae Gifford, Dade Gifford, and Andrew Pick.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ray.

A devoted member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Bill’s faith guided him throughout his life. His legacy of service, humor, and love will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
