Walter L Goodwin, Sr., 70, of Sioux City, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024 at his residence surrounded by his family. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at Family Worship Center 1315 Indian Hills Blvd in Sioux City. Pastor James Mosley & Pastor Douglas Glass officiating. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-7 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Walter was born on December 1, 1953 in Wilmot, Arkansas, the son of Willie and Vessie (McDade) Goodwin. He grew up in Wilmot and graduated from Wilmot High School. Walter moved to Sioux City with Deacon James Fenceroy in 1974. It is in Sioux City where Walter became a lifelong resident.
Walter worked in the packing industry for 35 years, and recently retired form Verschoor Meats.
On November 28, 1975 he married Rena Tillman in Elk Point, South Dakota.
Walter was very active in the community and the churches he served. Walter served as a deacon beginning at Mt. Sinai Holiness church, and later was elevated to the office of an ordained minister. Walter had the honor of working closely with various churches; Mt. Olive MB Church, Tabernacle COGIC and New Life COGIC. Each church was blessed to have Walter serve in any capacity he was willing to serve.
Not only was Walter a Jack of all trades, but he was a listener, humble communicator, and a people person at heart. Walter enjoyed fishing, mowing lawns, and you could even find him painting a house or hauling loads to the local junk yard. No matter who you were, Walter would take the time to talk to anyone. Walter loved his family very much and was very proud of them.
Survivors include his wife, Rena Goodwin; children: Keri Goodwin, Waltena “Tena” Olivares (Efren), Walter “Joe” Goodwin, Jr., Walonda “Londa” Goodwin, Waylon “Goody” Goodwin, and Tierra Goodwin; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters: Margaret Thompson of Brooklyn, NY, Ethel White of Toledo, OH, Evelyn Willis of Gary, IN, Coral Lewis(Charles) of Gary, IN, and Janet Dooley of Wilmot, AR; and brothers: James Goodwin of Toledo, OH, and Kenneth Goodwin(Gerdee) of Gary, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Willie Goodwin Jr; and sisters, Freddie Dozier and Janice Robinson.
