Wallace L. "Wally" Hansen

Onawa, Iowa

  Wallace L. “Wally” Hansen, 90, of Whiting and formerly of the Onawa area, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at a local care facility. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City at a later date.   Wally was born on November 24, 1933 in rural Veblin, South Dakota, to Herman and Thelma (Hoas) Hansen. He attended technical school for two years in Watertown, South Dakota, where he became certified as an airplane mechanic. He worked for several years in maintenance at Weller plastic manufacturing in Sioux City.

  Wally married Margaret Calhoun at Cathedral of the Epiphany Church in Sioux City, on July 7, 1998. The couple lived in Sloan for several years, later moving to Onawa.

  Wally loved to fly, and was proud of having his personal pilot’s license. He even landed his plane on the highway after a blizzard outside his family’s home!

  He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hansen; his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and one sister.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; one son; and one brother.
