Virgil H. Oligmueller, 85 of Jackson, Nebraska passed away Friday, June 21, 2024 at his home surrounded by family. A Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Jackson, Nebraska. Visitation will be Monday, June 24, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with rosary at 4:30 P.M. and vigil service at 7:00 P.M. all held at the church. Burial with military honors will immediately follow Mass at St. John’s Cemetery in rural Jackson, Nebraska.
Virgil was born the son of William and Johanna (Ortmeier) Oligmueller on September 5, 1938 in West Point, Nebraska. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Emerson in 1956. He honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1960.
On April 23, 1962, he was united in marriage to Rita Albenesius and together, they raised their seven children in the Jackson area. Virgil supported his family as an iron worker, mostly in the Sioux City area, where he helped construct the Siouxland skyline.
He was an avid gardener after his retirement. He was proud to share his produce, especially sauerkraut and tomato juice, with his family and friends. His peanut brittle was legendary during the holidays. He loved to attend all his grandchildren’s activities. He was an avid Nebraska Football fan and enjoyed many family gatherings watching the Huskers.
Virgil loved watching his children grow up and being active in their lives. He was very active in coaching them in baseball, basketball, and softball. He and Rita made it a priority to take their seven children on an annual vacation. They enjoyed spending winters in Texas for nearly 20 years. Virgil was immensely proud that all his children obtained college degrees. His children always considered him one of their best friends.
Virgil was an active member of the St. Patrick’s Church and the Hearty-McNally American Legion Post in Jackson. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus where he was honored as having the Family of the Year. Virgil was proud to be a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters where he held multiple officer positions for over thirty-five years and attended many national conventions.
He left a legacy of great memories, work ethic, morals and values. He will be missed but never forgotten, until we meet in heaven.
Survivors include his wife, Rita of 62 years; children, Richard “Rick” (Sheila) Oligmueller of Jackson, NE, Randy (Heidi) Oligmueller of Jackson, NE, Rodney (Janice) Oligmueller of Elkhorn, NE, Virgil Jr. (Jennifer) Oligmueller of Blair, NE, Rebecca (Roger) Bentz of Jackson, NE, Rochelle (Jason) Hebert of Austin, TX, and William “Bill” (Angela) Oligmueller of Louisville, NE; sisters, Dorothy Mendlik and twin sister, Virginia McTaggart; sister-in-law, Bernie Oligmueller, brother-in-laws, Larry (Claudette) Albenesius, Fr. Paul Albenesius, John (Deb) Albenesius, and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Albeneisus; grandchildren, Stephanie, Richard, Jr. (Katie), Jennifer, Avery, Isaac, Scott, Sarah, Brittany, Jackson, Grace, Parker, Rachel, Ryan (Cassandra), Elle, Ethan, Hannah, and Cain; seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Beata Prinz; brother, Francis Oligmueller; father-in-law Joseph (Christine) Albenesius, brothers-in-law, Tom Prinz, Richard Mendlik, Mike McTaggart, Ben Zimmerle and Robert Albenesius; sister-in-law, Joanne Zimmerle and nephew, Douglas Temple.
