Vern L Bright

November 14, 1960 — February 7, 2024

South Sioux City

Vern L Bright, 63 of South Sioux City unexpectedly passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2024 as a result of an accident. A memorial visitation will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service to follow at 7:00 P.M. at Country Celebrations in Sioux City, IA.

Vern was born the son of Darel and Josephine (Mlinar) Bright on November 14, 1960 in Atkinson, Nebraska. He graduated from O’Neill High School and later from the University of Nebraska Kearney with a degree in Construction Management. Vern married Keli Haselhorst on September 1, 1984 in O’Neill, Nebraska. They spent time in Utah and Colorado before settling in South Sioux City to raise their children.

Vern worked in construction management his entire career and spent the last 18 years with Ho-Chunk Construction Group. He was passionate about his work and enjoyed his time with them.

Vern loved all things sports, including attending Husker games and the College World Series. He also enjoyed working on the family ranch, traveling in the RV, boating on the river, playing golf, and going for rides on his Harley. He enjoyed volunteering with various groups around the community and especially with and through the South Sioux City Optimist Club.

At the center of his life was his family. He loved spending time with his wife and kids. Vern was there for anything his loved ones needed, from unexpected airport rides, starter home repair projects, or to attend any event celebrating one’s accomplishments. He was always eager to help with anything and for anybody. He had a big personality, but an even bigger heart, always making time to talk to anyone.

A note from his wife and children:

“In loving memory of our cherished Dad, whose infectious laugh brought joy to every room, and his unconditional support was a pillar of strength for all who knew him. The title of Father fails to summarize the greatness he contributed in our lives like bedtime storyteller, Little League coach, Mr. Fixit, Guber driver, photographer, game champion (any game, there were no pity wins), campfire architect, travel buddy, sports fanatic, and advice giver. His calm, steady presence brought comfort and peace to the chaos of everyday life. Today we celebrate a remarkable soul who leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless memories. May his unwavering kindness continue to shine through his friends and family. Love ya forever plus a day, Fajah.”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the South Sioux City Optimist Club. Checks may be mailed to the South Sioux City Optimist Club, 553 Laura Lane, South Sioux City, NE 68776. Please note Vern’s name on your donation.
