Velma G. Watchorn

Velma G. Watchorn, 96, of Ponca, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2022.  Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 8, 2022 at Ponca United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be Sunday, August 7, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. all held at the church.  Burial will be at Ponca City Cemetery.  

Velma was born the daughter of Luther and Laura “Josie” (Kirk) Foulks on February 5, 1926 in rural Ponca, Nebraska.  She was raised on the family farm and attended Martinsburg schools.  Velma married Glen Watchorn on June 1, 1947 in Ponca.  They made their home on the farm Northwest of Ponca.  Velma raised her family and also helped Glen on the farm for many years.  They enjoyed 52 years together until Glen passed away in 2000. 

Velma enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, and crossword puzzles.  She had a love for horses that she passed on to her daughter, Ruth.  She also enjoyed working in her flower garden.    

Velma is survived by her children, Dale (Rosemary) Watchorn of Wiota, Iowa, Ruth (Ron) Detloff of Le Mars, Iowa, and John Watchorn of Ponca; 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Virginia Watchorn of Oceanside, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen; brothers, George and Merle; sisters, Orma and Betty; and son-in-law, Robert Fairbanks.
