Thomas R. "Thom" Havelaar

Thomas R. “Thom” Havelaar, 79 of South Sioux City passed away Friday, March 22, 2024. A memorial visitation will be Thursday, March 28, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Thom was born the son of Marion and Patsy (Hooks) Havelaar on November 11, 1944 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He graduated from Oklahoma Military Academy. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968. Thom married Carol Landers on June 11, 1966 in New York. They lived many places over the years before eventually settling in Nebraska.

Thom spent a majority of his career in law enforcement starting as a patrol officer in East Syracuse, New York. He worked his way up to Detective Sargent. He was proud to serve as the Chief of Police in Sturgis, South Dakota and Under Sheriff while they were living in Garden City, Kansas. He retired from IBP as the Director of Investigative Services in South Sioux City, NE.

He enjoyed working on cars. He was most proud of his 1910 Model T Ford restoration and also had many corvettes over the years including a 1978 Pace car. He enjoyed listening to 70’s music and anything with a good beat. He spent time going to the shooting range, spending time with his grandchildren, and attending their activities.

Thom is survived by his wife, Carol Havelaar of South Sioux City, NE; daughters, Tamara (William) Herrera of Chandler, AZ, Holly (Ed) Rick of Willis, TX, Christine (Kirk) Gibb of Mesa, AZ, and Stephanie Hamman of Sergeant Bluff, IA; brother, Ronald (Mary Lou) Havelaar; and grandchildren, Eric, Rylee, Kyndal, Jake, William, Thomas, and Isabella.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Tracy.
