Terry Wayne Goodwin, 80, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026.
Terry was born January 19, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Wayne Edward Goodwin and LaVaun M. (Junck) Goodwin of Lawton, Iowa. Terry had an idyllic childhood in Lawton, living with his parents and two younger sisters in a small white house across the street from the school. A friend to everyone, Terry was voted Coronation King by his classmates at Lawton High School in 1964. He then received a bachelor's degree in history from Wayne State College and a master's degree in education from the University of Nebraska.
Terry taught history, social studies, and economics in Papillion, Nebraska; Carroll, Iowa; and Storm Lake, Iowa. He is still in touch with many of his teaching colleagues and some of his students. His love of learning remained constant throughout his life, with a large collection of books that includes historical biographies by David McCullough, Ron Chernow, and Walter Isaacson.
Tall and handsome, and sporting a full head of hair into his 30s, Terry drew the attention of Colleen McGillen one night at a bar in Sioux City. It took Terry three years to recognize his good fortune, and he and Colleen decided to get married. He moved to Sioux City and took a temporary job with the Iowa Department of Human Services, Child Support Recovery Unit. His employment did prove to be temporary, ending after a mere 27 (mostly pleasant) years. Terry retired as a supervisor, fueled by black coffee, peanut butter sandwiches, and the knowledge that he was making Iowa a better place for children.
Colleen and Terry raised two children, Michael and Sarah, and they lived in Sioux City with a succession of mischievous schnauzers. Terry was a good neighbor who took pride in his house, yard, and garden. Unfortunately, he was unable to pass along his fastidiousness to his children, despite repeated insistence that all chores "would only take five minutes."
Colleen and Terry took many wonderful trips in retirement, including to Savannah, Georgia and Rome, Italy. They also enjoyed visiting children, grandchildren, and other relatives. They attended Nativity Church. Colleen suddenly passed away in 2022, leaving Terry heartbroken and looking forward to a reunion in the afterlife. He took comfort in the love of his family and friends, particularly the Wednesday Morning Grandpa Coffee Group.
Terry was preceded in death by his mother and father; father-in-law Frank and mother-in-law Catherine McGillen; his wife Colleen; and brothers-in-law Rod Rentel and Wayne Albers and sister-in-law Carole McGillen. Terry is survived by son Michael (Megan Breit-Goodwin) of Minneapolis; daughter Sarah of Omaha; dog Daisy; grandchildren Catherine and Elizabeth; sister Kaye of Waverly; sister Nancy of Sioux City; sister-in-law Patti (Bill) Sus of Chicago; sister-in-law Peggy (Bob) Brennan of Chicago; brothers in law Mike (Patty) McGillen of Detroit, Tim McGillen of Detroit, Tom McGillen of Long Beach, California, and Sean (Dana) McGillen of Detroit; numerous nieces and nephews.
Terry was a quiet and humble person and requested a quiet and humble graveside service. The service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 18 at Banner Twp. Cemetery – Lawton, Iowa. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at the Wheelhouse in Sioux City.
