Susan Mae Smith, 67, of South Sioux City, a cherished soul, departed this life on Monday, February 9, 2026, at a local hospital, leaving behind a legacy woven from love, laughter, and care.

Per her wishes, cremation will take place and services will be held at a later date.

Susan was born on September 2, 1958, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the daughter of Harlan and Hazel (Erickson) Berg. Susan proudly graduated from West Lyon High School. She married Daniel Lee Smith and to this union, three sons were born. The couple later divorced.

A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter, Susan dedicated her professional life as an accountant for Phillips Kiln-FLSmidth and her husband’s business, DNS Landscaping. Her strong work ethic and meticulous nature were reflective of her commitment to excellence, traits she instilled in her family through both words and actions.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Susan found immense joy in gardening and baking, activities that highlighted her nurturing spirit. Each flower she tended and every cake she baked were a testament to her creativity and her ability to bring warmth into the lives of those around her. Equally important to her were the countless hours spent volunteering and giving back to her community. However, nothing brought her greater joy than the precious moments spent with her family, particularly her beloved grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving mother, Hazel Berg; her cherished sons, Tony Lee Smith and his wife Stacey of Spring Hill, KS, and Benjamin Edward Smith and his wife Samantha of Omaha, NE; as well as her adoring grandchildren: Harlan John, Wrenley Hazel, Kaden Alexander, Nathan Edward, Brennan Oliver, Landon Owen, and Grayson Evan Smith, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Her spirit will also live on in the memories of her sister, Diane “Dino” and her husband Scott Gamble of Delano, MN, as well as her brothers, Daniel and Gerald Berg, both of Rock Rapids, IA.

Susan was predeceased by her father, Harlan O. Berg, and her son, Nathan Smith, whose memories she carried with her as a guiding light on her journey.
