Steve was born November 1, 1958, in O’Neill, Nebraska to Dean and Virginia (Kerr) Horner.  He was raised in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1977.  While at Heelan, he excelled in football and was a key member of the 1975 Crusader State Championship team.  Steve played Division II college football at the University of South Dakota, where he graduated with a degree in criminal justice in 1981.

On June 4, 1988, he married Caron Guiles, a beautiful police dispatcher he met while at work.

He was an active member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church.  He prayed the rosary daily and loved to attend daily Mass when possible.  Caron and Steve were also weekly Eucharistic Adorers.  He was an active mentor in his sons’ Boy Scout troop all the way through both achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.  He helped many Boy Scouts earn their badges.

Steve was an unselfish 22 gallon blood donor.  He enjoyed attending his children’s events.  His most favorite activity in life was day trips, hiking and camping in the mountains (or anywhere for that matter) with his family.

Steve will be lovingly remembered by the love of his life, his wife of 34 years, Caron; his daughter Stephanie of Commerce City, and sons Matthew of Littleton and Michael of Johnstown; sisters Mary Jean Lewis of Lee’s Summit, Mo. and Carolyn (Doug) Dykstra of Rogers, Ark., and brother Michael (Claudia) Horner of South Sioux City, Neb.; father-in-law Jerry Guiles of Thornton; sister-in-law Catherine (Tim) Kubik of Littleton; brothers-in-law Kevin (Cindy) of Fort Worth, Tx. and Marvin (fiancée Suzanne) of Stow, Mass.; and many nieces and their husbands and nephews and their wives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara; mother-in-law Marie Guiles; brothers-in-law Jerry Alan Guiles and Ron Lewis.
