Sophie Bernice Williams, 97, of Sioux City, Iowa passed away peacefully on Friday, August 7, 2026, at a local care center.

Visitation with the family will be held Thursday, August 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel with a burial ceremony immediately following at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Sophie was born February 24, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa to William and Amelia (Korsak) Pumputis, who both traveled over on a ship from Lithuania around 1920. She attended East High School and later married Edward Williams. Together, they were blessed with two children, Tye and Deborah. Edward preceded Sophie in death on July 15, 1965.

Sophie was a familiar and beloved face in the Sioux City community. For many years, she owned and operated The 20th Street Tap, located at the corner of 20th and Pierce St. In 1976, the business moved to the Morningside area on Jay Avenue, where Sophie continued creating a place where everyone felt welcomed for many years. She was especially known for her Friday night fish fries and memorable St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, where she served traditional corned beef and cabbage dinners. Sophie had a special gift for bringing people together with her warm and welcoming spirit. She was always ready to liven things up with her jukebox, filling the room with lively polkas and creating cherished memories for family and friends

Later in life, Sophie served as a Senior Companion for 14 years, continuing her lifelong tradition of caring for and helping others. She was giving, compassionate and her faith, family, and friends were at the heart of everything she did. Sophie was very active in her church, where she attended services regularly, attended many bible studies and was a member of the Koinonia group. In her free time, she also enjoyed crocheting and playing Skip-Bo with her friends and family.

Sophie will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Tye (Linda) Williams of Sergeant Bluff and Deborah (Scott) Westphal of Sioux City; grandchildren, Chad Kroll of Sioux City, Kayla (Jeremy) Hanson of Grimes, IA, Brittney (Ryan) Obermeier of Bondurant, Iowa, Travis (Tiffany) Williams of Hinton, Cody (Sadie) Williams of Sergeant Bluff, and Cory (Jenny) Westphal of Parrish, FL; great-grandchildren, Cayden, Corbin, Cason, and Sophie Obermeier, Claire and Audrey Williams, Frankie and Mac Williams, Nolan and Nash Hanson, and Ava and Tate Westphal; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; brothers Joe, Pete and Leo Pumputis; and sister Anne Redsville.

Sophie leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, faith, friendship, and family. She will be remembered for her generous heart, being a caregiver and her strong faith in God.
