Obituary

Somboon (Panyasree) Ruenprom, a beloved mother, grandmother, and pillar of her family, peacefully passed away on May 23, 2026, in her home in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Born on June 2, 1949, in Phrae, Thailand, Somboon's journey was one marked by hard work, boundless love, and unwavering dedication.

Before coming to America, Somboon ran a modest food stall in Thailand that sold fresh fruits, vegetables, and seasonal goods. Her connection to the land and the bounty it provided was evident in everything she did. In 1984, she journeyed to the United States with her family, first living in Lincoln, Nebraska, for nine months before settling in South Sioux City. It was here that she began a long and dedicated career at IBP (Iowa Beef Processing), now known as Tyson, starting on June 10, 1985. Somboon loved her work deeply and was known for arriving early and staying late just to enjoy the company of her coworkers. She never hesitated to share her home-cooked Thai meals and fresh fruits, touching the lives of many with her generosity and kindness.

Somboon’s educational path took place in Thailand where she attended school until the fourth grade, the highest level available at the time in her village. Despite being offered a position as a teacher, she humbly declined, choosing instead to forge a different path for herself and her family.

A woman of formidable spirit and stubborn resolve, Somboon’s heart was as vast as her capacity for care. She was the anchor of her family, a leader whose strength and love formed the very foundation of those she held dear. No matter the occasion—whether a joyous celebration or a moment of sorrow—she was always there, ensuring no one ever felt left out or unloved. Her devotion was evident in the smallest acts: the nurturing meals she lovingly prepared, the tender knuckles on the head when discipline was needed, and the warm laughter shared over family gardening or shopping trips.

Her children recall many cherished moments that reflect her vibrant spirit and loving nature. Surang treasured their trips to the casino, the thrill of winning together creating some of her fondest memories, as well as their shared joy in gardening at Somboon’s trailer. Santhi remembers shopping excursions to Walmart and how her mother uniquely bonded with each family member, making everyone feel special. Jutharatana fondly speaks of Somboon’s cooking, made always with love, and the piercing gaze that silently conveyed her depth of emotion. Niramol recalls the amusing way Somboon expressed her love through tough reprimands followed swiftly by meals brimming with care and flavor—particularly the bamboo shoots and mushrooms she cooked for her. Roongravee cherishes being called over to share her mother’s delicious meals and the lighthearted jokes that buoyed their spirits, even as she helped with gardening despite health challenges. Thanya holds dear their trip back to Thailand with their father, remembering the happiness and extraordinary care Somboon tirelessly provided.

Somboon’s joys extended beyond family; she delighted in watching Thai television, nurturing her garden, cooking, engaging in lively chats with her children over the phone, and enjoying time at the casino. Her beloved dog, Coco, was another cherished companion who brought comfort and joy into her life.

Her passing came gently after an illness, as she peacefully slipped away in her sleep under the loving care of hospice, surrounded by those she treasured most. Somboon’s legacy lives on through her six children—Roongravee (Matthew) Mogensen, Niramol Ruenprom, Surang Ruenprom, Jutharatana Ruenprom, Thanya Ruenprom, and another Surang Ruenprom—her ten grandchildren—Agarath Siharath, Anita (Richard) Sek, Alex (Sarah) Mogensen, Benjamin Siharath, Andrew (Chris Bane) Collins, Toranong Donovan Ruenprom, Kristlin (Casey) Bright, Tiayana Mogensen, Rhyan (Cindy Nguyen) Ooi, and Lee Ruenprom—and her three great-grandchildren—Lilyana Sek, Iris Mogensen, and Oliver Bright—with two more great-grandchildren on the way.

She is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Urid Ruenprom, who passed in 2013; her parents; two brothers; and a nephew in Thailand.

Somboon was not only the foundation of her family but also their guiding light—a generous, caring soul whose warmth enveloped every life she touched. She leaves behind a world brighter for her presence and hearts forever full of her love. The community will gather to honor her memory on May 30, 2026, with a visitation from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at the Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave, Sioux City, IA. Her spirit of love, dedication, and resilience will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
