Samuel Henry Smith, 18, of Sioux City, Iowa passed away on April 30, 2025 at Unity Point Hospital surrounded by his loved ones. Born on March 13, 2007, Sam was the son of Renae Smith Wingate, who preceded him in death. He was without question his mother’s pride and joy. In October of 2020, Sam was adopted by his aunt, Janet King, who cared for him through many of Sam’s hardest days. At the time of his passing, he was working to finish another academic year at East High School.
Sam will be remembered as a lover of all things anime. He also found great joy in editing videos and movies, playing video games, and hanging out with his friends.
Sam was a baptized member and an ordained Priest of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Here, he found fellowship with many of his truest friends. He was beloved by his bishop and other youth group leaders who often offered Sam rides to and from church activities. Some of Sam’s fondest memories took place on youth group trips to Nauvoo, Illinois, and Lincoln, Nebraska, where he once gained instant fame for his iconic hair-do and a camp talent show performance where he energized listeners with his vocal talent.
Sam is survived by Janet and Luther King, sister cousins Loretta King and Jannelle Smith, brother cousins Taylor Reynolds and Nikolas King, plus numerous other family and friends.
The family expresses gratitude to Sam’s doctors and nurses, Meyer Brothers Funeral Home, and the Community Action Agency for their respective efforts to assist them at this time.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 17 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located on Clifton Avenue in Sioux City. His remains will be laid to eternal rest at a later date.
