Ronald "Ron" K.
Sherrill Sr.
Aug 31, 1937 — Aug 15, 2026
Sioux City, Iowa
Ronald “Ron” K. Sherrill was born on August 31, 1937, in Washta, Iowa, to Arther and Elsie (Negless) Sherrill.
He graduated from Galva High School in 1955 and proudly enlisted in the United States Army immediately after graduation. Ron spent much of his service time stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado and in Germany.
After returning home from Germany, Ron met the love of his life, Karen Ann Berglund. They were married on December 9, 1960, beginning a beautiful journey of nearly 66 years together. Ron always said he had “reeled her in,” and from that day forward they built a life filled with love, laughter, family, and countless memories.
Ron worked for United Parcel Service for 31 years, earning the prestigious honor of safe driving. Throughout his entire career, even through late nights, difficult routes, and challenging weather conditions, Ron never had a single accident. His dedication, reliability, and pride in his work were a reflection of the man he was.
Together, Ron and Karen raised four children: Gregory Sherrill and his life partner Lisa Parsons; Bradley and Kitten Sherrill; Wendy and Mike Beavers; and Ron Sherrill, Jr. Great joy came from his family, and he adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He cherished every moment with them: Sheenah and Spetlar Tonga and their children Tuff, Titan, and Teague; Michael and Abbie Beavers and their children Bowen and Blake; Sarah Sayavong (Adam) and their children Jordan, Tylee and Kairo; Ryan Sherrill and his children Hudson and Harrison; Carlee Sherrill and her children Willow, Forrest, and Rivver; Lexa Sherrill; Eric and Blaire Sherrill and their children Jett and Roczen; Tyler and Jessica Sherrill.
Ron was blessed not only with family by blood, but also with friends who became family. John and Sandy Mansfield and Jack and Alice Lawrenson stood beside Ron and Karen for more than 50 years. They watched over them, helped whenever needed, shared meals, laughter, and memories, and were there through life’s hardest moments. Their kindness and friendship meant more than words can express.
Ron loved being outdoors, especially fishing and spending time in a boat or along the shoreline surrounded by family and friends. He found peace in the glow of the water, the steady moonlight, good conversation, and a cold beer in his hand. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and treasured a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Wrigley Field with his wife and youngest son, Ron. A few years later, the Cubs won the World Series—a memory that made the trip even more special.
Ron was known for his unmistakable laugh, his Elvis-like charm, and his incredible woodworking skills. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was also known as a true “pet whisperer.” Many rescued, lonely, or troubled animals found comfort and safety with Ron because of his gentle spirit and special ability to make them feel loved.
He was always willing to lend a hand, whether helping with fair projects, school activities, household repairs, or simply offering guidance. Ron was an intelligent man who seemed to have an answer for almost every question. He could solve problems, complete crossword puzzles faster than most, and figure out nearly anything put in front of him. He was the voice of reason and made it feel alright to sit down and talk about the hard things. He never judged, he listened, encouraged and was there anytime we needed to talk again.
Ron lived a simple but meaningful life. His greatest gifts were his kindness, loyalty, humor, wisdom, and unwavering love for those around him. His hand was always ready to help, and his heart was always in the right place.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, compassion, and memories that will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.
Waiting for Ron on the shore line of heaven are his parents Arther and Elsie (Negless) Sherrill, brother Berle Sherrill and sister Karen (Sherrill) Hoeppner.
The family requests memorials be made in Ron's honor to The Rivercade Fishing Derby, the VA or Noah's Hope.
Ron’s family sincerely appreciates Brooke Benes at Cornerstone Caregiving and the VA for their compassionate care when he needed it most.
