Bert was born on May 21, 1936 in Winnebago, Nebraska, the daughter of Robert and Winona (St. Cyr) Hidalgo. She attended South Sioux City schools. During high school, she worked at various local hangouts including the local roller rink and A&W root beer stand, where she met many lifelong friends.

On November 3, 1956 Bert married Leonard P. Gill at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in South Sioux City. The pair made their home in Jackson, Nebraska, in 1956 and remained Jackson residents throughout their lives.

Bert was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Mary Our Queen court 2055, as well as the Harty McNally American Legion and the Legion Auxilliary. She was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Jackson and served countless roles within the church, including the St. Patrick’s Altar Society, St. Patrick’s Parish Council, and played as the church organist.

Within her community, Bert was on the Dakota County Health Board of Directors and volunteered as a lunch lady, where she acquired the name “Grandma Bert” by all the school kids.

Bert had so many activities that brought her happiness, including serving others and helping those in need, all part of her generous nature.

She was famous for her popcorn balls at Halloween, drawing kids and adults alike to the Gill home. She made the best Christmas candy and always loved the holidays.

To be honest, Bert enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. She valued her friendships, old and new. She enjoyed card club with her friends and quilting. Her love for quilting kept her busy, while giving her works of art away for others to enjoy.

The times that brought her the most joy was gathering at the family pond and the Love Shack! She cherished her time with Leonard and their grandchildren, family, and friends.

She will be remembered for her daily devotion to prayer and her strong faith. She was always ready to offer words of support by saying “Just do it” and singing “diggy diggy do do, I love you” while bouncing a grandbaby on her lap.

Survivors include her children: Jeanie Hohenstein (Kevin) of Jackson, Bernie Gill (Lindy) of Jackson, and Ginger Gill (Doug Jones) of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren: Patrick Gill (Julie), Anthony Gill (Sara), Greggory Gill (Kristina), Emilye Gill (John), Melissa Hohenstein (Mark), Kyle Hohenstein (Laura), Branden Hohenstein (Alyna), Nevaeh Hatch, Samantha Hamar (Brandon), Thomas Gill (Holly) Elexia Saucerman (Branson), Breanna Gill (Brogan), Justin Sininger (Josie), and Carissa Seybolt (Jarrod); 13 great-grandchildren; her sisters: Norma Ulmer (Gene) of Dakota Dunes, SD, and Mona Miller (Bill) of Pleasanton, KS; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
