Robert L. "Bob" Vander Weil, 87, of Sioux City, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, July 17, 2026. Bob's lifelong connection to his hometown and his unwavering dedication to service leave a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with Pastor John Jorgensen officiating. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bob was born on January 11, 1939, in Sioux City, Iowa, one of twin sons born to Paul and Florence (Block) Vander Weil. He attended Irving Elementary School and Woodrow Wilson Junior High before graduating from Central High School in 1959. Following graduation, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he trained as a jet aircraft mechanic and was stationed at Stead Air Force Base in Reno, Nevada.

After receiving an honorable discharge in 1963, Bob returned to Sioux City. He met and married the love of his life, Suzanne L. Dahl, on June 19, 1965. Bob's strong sense of duty to both his country and his community was evident throughout his life. In 1967, he began his career with the Sioux City Police Department, faithfully serving the community for 27 years until his retirement.

Bob had a lifelong passion for classic cars and enjoyed restoring cars and he and his children raced their 1974 Chevy Nova in NHRA Drag Racing. He also found joy in feeding the neighborhood wildlife and dogs, always making sure they were cared-for. Bob was rarely idle, whether he was working in his garage, creating a new invention, or spending treasured time with his family. He will be remembered for his quiet generosity, strong work ethic, and the love he shared with those closest to him.

Grateful to have shared his life are his beloved wife of 61 years, Suzanne "Suzy" Vander Weil; his children, Brent (Darla) Vander Weil and Stacy Vander Weil, all of Sioux City; his grandchildren, Blake St. Peter of Sioux City and Madelyn (Ryan) Pedersen of Jackson, Nebraska; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Waylon Pedersen and soon-to-arrive Clara Louise Pedersen.

He is also survived by his twin brother, Richard (Jan) Vander Weil of Spokane, Washington; his sister-in-law, Marlene Vander Wiel; his brother-in-law, Skip Dahl; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Florence Vander Weil; his brothers, Cecil (Dorothy) Vander Weil and Paul Vander Wiel; and his sister, Elaine Davis.

Memorials in Bob's memory may be directed to Hospice of the Midwest or St. Luke Lutheran Church.
