Robert S. Grothaus, 89, of Sioux City, IA passed away Friday, April 7, 2023, at Westwood Specialty Care Center after a brief Illness, with his wife by his side. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2023 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Kenny Hsu officiating. The family will be present at the visitation one hour prior to the funeral service with a luncheon to follow. Memorial may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City, IA. Robert was born on July 7, 1933, in Sioux City to John and Ione (Petersen) Grothaus. He attended public schools in Kingsley, and Le Mars, graduating from Le Mars Central High School in 1952. After graduation he worked at a local grocery store till 1955 when he entered the U.S. Army. His basic training was at Ft. Chaffee, AK after which he was deployed to South Korea where he served with the 11th Field Artillery Battalion in the 24th Infantry Division. In 1957 he was released from active duty and served with the U.S Army Reserve for four more years. He was a veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 64.
On June 12, 1960, he married Charlotte Gertsmeier at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aurelia, IOA. After graduating from the National Business School, he obtained employment at the Toy National Bank, February 1960. When the bank was sold in 1987, he was a Vice President and Trust Officer. He retired from Norwest Bank in 1998.
Bob was a very active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Sioux City where he served as Vice President, Chairman of the church council, Elder Treasurer, and Chairman of the Stewardship Board. He also served as an Officer and Director of Siouxland Estate Planning Council, Officer, and Director of the Siouxland Mental Health Corporation, and was a member of the Exchange Club of Sioux City.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, son, Richard (Leticia) Grothaus of Sioux City, IA, daughter, Brenda (Ron) Grimsley of Sloan, IA, eight grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Ione Grothaus, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Glen and Eloise Nelsen, brother and sister-in-law, Ordell and Marilyn Gertsmeier, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer, and Eva Gertsmeier.
