Robert “Mike” Estes, 79 of Sioux City passed away Monday, June 10, 2024. A brief military interment service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 20, 2024 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
Mike was born the son of Robert K. and Louise (Clayton) Estes on November 20, 1944 in Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School and then honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1969. During his military service, he married Judy Augustine on July 24, 1965. After several moves during and after his military service, they made their home in Iowa, first in Des Moines then Marshalltown and finally Sioux City.
Mike spent his career in the optical field working for American Optical before purchasing Wehrman Optical in Marshalltown in 1978. After selling the business, they moved to Sioux City in 1999 where Mike worked for Pech Optical until his retirement.
Mike had an impact on the lives of all he met, especially the young adults. Some of his greatest joys were serving as a youth group leader at Unity Lutheran Church in Des Moines and hosting several Musketeer hockey players over the years. In addition, he loved to read, ride his motorcycle, and spend time with his family.
Mike is survived by his wife, Judy Estes of Sioux City, IA; daughters, Melissa (Scott) Pearson of Mitchellville, IA and Shelly Estes of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Tanner (Stephanie)Spurlin, Jacey Haffner, Ryan (Stacia Fortune) Pearson, Connor Pearson, Kaylee (Jordan Brockway) Pearson; great-grandchildren, Amelia Haffner, Nolan Spurlin, Charlotte Pearson and in-laws Dianne Ready, Patty (Bob) Leever, Jerry Augustine and Carol Bales
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother in-law Richard Ready and sister in-law Sheila Augustine.
In lieu of flowers, due to the restrictions of the military service, a memorial may be made to Partners for Patriots.
