Robert “Bob” John Hegarty, 78, went to his heavenly home Friday, August 30 at Douglas County Memorial Hospital. Memorial service will be Friday, September 6 at 10:30 am, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel (6200 Morningside Ave.) in Sioux City. Burial with military honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Bob was born January 4, 1946 to George and Lorene (Ortner) Hegarty in Sioux City, IA. He attended and graduated from Leeds High School in Sioux City. He served his country in the United States Air Force National Guard from August 25, 1965 until being honorably discharged on August 24, 1970. He was united in marriage on April 3, 1967 to Dixie Rae Betsworth. Bob was a car salesman in the Sioux City area for many years. He enjoyed cooking and baking, watching westerns on TV, and playing cribbage and yahtzee. He enjoyed music, especially cowboy music, and would sing just about anything. He was an avid Denver Broncos Fan and also enjoyed coffee time and talks with friends and huge hugs.
Grateful for having shared his life are his 3 children: Kerry (Mike) Cushing of Litchfield Park, AZ and their daughter, Kayla of Englewood, CO; Sean Hegarty of Newell, IA; and Molly (Mark) Petersen of Onawa, IA; and 7 siblings: Geri Kayl of Sioux City; Ronnie (Carol) Hegarty of Sioux City; Pat (Jim) Abdo of Sioux City; Dan (Cris) Hegarty of Storm Lake, IA; Randy (Pat) Hegarty of Bakersfield, CA; Terry (Paula) Hegarty of Sioux City and Tom (Carol) Hegarty of Lone Tree, CO.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie; a grandson, Cedric Hueschen; parents, George and Lorene; sister, Judy (Marion) Hobbs; brother-in-law, Gary Kayl; 2 nephews, Darrel Kayl and Brian Hobbs; and niece, Sarah Dvergsten.
