Obituary

Richard “Dick” V. Thoreson, 86 of Sioux City passed away Monday, April 13, 2026 with his family by his side following a brief illness.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, April 20, 2026 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12-1 prior to the service. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dick was born the son of Norman and Helen (McCord) Thoreson on February 13, 1940 in Monona County, Iowa. He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1958. On April 9, 1961 he married JoAnn Madsen at the Lutheran Church in Onawa. They enjoyed 65 years together.

He honorably served in the Army National Guard for six years. He attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. Dick worked for the Federal Land Bank for six years, at which time he purchased some farm ground in Mapleton and began his dream of farming his own land. In addition to farming, he later became a farm manager for Security National Bank and eventually started his own farm management business. He retired in 2005 and they moved to Sioux City where they spent time enjoying activities with their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dick is survived by his wife, JoAnn Thoreson of Sioux City; daughter, Kathy Jo (Doug) Hagemann of Mapleton; son, Ted Thoreson of Holstein; grandchildren, Jared Hagemann, Kysa Jo (Josh) DeGraw, Taylor (Steven) Shaw, Tyson Thoreson and Trista Thoreson; great grandchildren, Thoreson DeGraw, Andi and Aiden Shaw, and Echo Thoreson; brother, Don (Carole) Thoreson; sisters, Marlene McCall and Marcia Thoreson.

Preceded in death by his parents Norman and Helen (McCord) Thoreson and brother, Leo Thoreson.
