Richard Dean Skuya, 75, passed peacefully Sunday, September 28, surrounded by his family and loving friend Linda Craft. He is survived by his brother Joseph, his three children: David (Seanna), James (Jenn), and Matthew (Jacob), and grandchildren Connor and Asher.
Richard is preceded in death by his wife Colleen, and his parents Joseph and Dorothy.
Richard, a Vietnam veteran, proudly served his country for twenty - one years receiving several awards along the way including two bronze stars. After his service, he went to work building a family with his loving wife and three sons. Richard worked at Hubbard Milling for many years before deciding to pave his own trail and start his own business before retiring from the Sioux City Transit as a bus driver.
More often than not, Richard could be found in his garage where he happily turned wrenches on his beloved cars while having a good laugh with his friends. His ideal day was working in his garage, listening to psychedelic rock songs of the sixties, and “shooting the breeze” with whoever would stop by. And there were many as his sense of humor would bring joy to all who visited. His days would end with the sun setting over his castle on the hill while his wife tended to the garden during their retirement.
Later in life, he showed profound devotion to his wife Colleen who developed mobility challenges later in life. With Richard behind the wheel, they travelled across the country they were so proud of. Colleen would snap pictures of the countryside and random sites along the way all while Richard would be scouting for the cheapest gas that he could find.
The family would like to thank all the family, friends and colleagues who knew and loved him. Richard’s warm laugh and sense of humor will be missed by all of us.
