Richard Lee Mackey Sr., affectionately known as "Papa", passed away unexpectedly at MercyOne Hospital in Sioux City on October 29, 2024, at the age of 74. Rick, the son of Harold Mackey and Florence and Marvin Gustavson, was born on January 2, 1950. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City, where he grew up and attended school.
A skilled backyard mechanic, Rick's passion for working on cars turned into a lifelong career. His love for automobiles included the negotiation of buying and selling his cars. He was an enthusiastic collector, amassing a significant array of model cars, guns, and coins throughout his life. The joy of collecting was matched only by his enthusiasm for riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle, which often took him to his favorite vacation spot in Sturgis, South Dakota. He also enjoyed playing darts and pool.
On January 9, 1981, Rick was united in marriage to Carol A. (Holder) Johnson in Sioux City. Rick was deeply devoted to his family, which was evident in his unwavering support and love for them. He cherished his role as a grandfather, enthusiastically attending all of his grandchildren's sporting events. Rick's playful spirit allowed him to tease his loved ones, while his nurturing nature ensured he was always available to lend a helping hand. His love extended not only to his family but also to the pets that filled his life with companionship.
Rick is survived by his wife, Carol; children Jeffery (Kim) Johnson, Janell Johnson, Jason Johnson, and Rikki Mackey; and grandchildren Shawn Johnson, Holly (Wesley) Bowman, and Kayla Johnson. Additionally, he is blessed with great-grandchildren Delaney and Drake Johnson and Waverly and Hadley Bowman. Rick is also survived by six siblings and their families, who will carry on his legacy of love and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Richard Mackey Jr., and two brothers.
Rick gave the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.
