Dick was born on January 24, 1934 in Sioux City, the son of John and Nellie (Skoglund) Jorstad. Throughout his life, Dick was very proud of his Norwegian heritage!
He grew up in Sioux City, and graduated from Central High School in 1952. He then went on to attend Iowa State University.
In 1955 he joined the United States Army, serving active duty for two years before transferring to the Army Reserves, where he continued his service for an additional six years.
On June 20, 1959 Dick married Sarah E. “Pearlie” DeWitt at Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City. To this union they welcomed two children: John and Julie. Sarah preceded Dick in death on February 2, 2023 in Sioux City.
Dick was a lifelong Sioux City resident, and he and Sarah made their home at the top of the hill on Summit Street for over 50 years where he was lovingly referred by his friends and neighbors as “the Mayor of 28th and Summit.”
Dick worked several years for Stran Steel in the steel building industry, then moving to Modern Materials which eventually became Modern Kitchen Design. Dick continued with Modern Kitchen Design until his retirement.
Within the community, Dick was involved with the noon Sertoma Club and the Yellow Dog Auction group. He was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City, as well as a member of the Sioux City Country Club where he was an avid golfer (and achieved a whopping four holes-in-one!) and met many friends. One of his friends reminisced that “There was never a stranger to Dick when he was on the golf course.” He was also a member of Bridge Club along with Sarah, and a member of the Home Builders Association.
Dick and Sarah enjoyed traveling with their children to Florida, where Dick loved spending his time golfing.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dick’s name to either Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or to Siouxland Catholic Radio.
Dick's family would like to extend a special thank you to Dick's home health care aide who has become a true family friend, Sissy Crawford.
Survivors include his children: John Jorstad (Shannon) of Sioux City; and Julie Jorstad (Shawn Goslar) of Sioux City; grandchildren: Lincoln Goslar; and Matthew, Ethan, and Mary Jorstad.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah; parents; and a sister, Jean McHugh.
