Pat lived a life dedicated to family, public service, and his community. Pat graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1958. He attended Morningside College in Sioux City, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. He then went on to the University of Iowa College of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1966.
Born on the Fourth of July, Pat seemed destined for the work that would define his life. Pat devoted much of his professional life to public service and the law. He served as a District Associate Judge beginning January 13, 1996, until his retirement in 2006 as Senior Judge.
Earlier in his career, he held several important legal and public service positions. He served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and previously worked as Assistant City Attorney for the City of Sioux City from 1968 to 1971 and again from 1973 to 1976. From 1969 to 1973, he served as a United States Magistrate for the Northern District of Iowa. Pat also served the community as Woodbury County Attorney from 1979 to 1986. In addition, he was a member of the Sioux City Municipal Airport Advisory Board from 1967 to 1969.
In 1962, Pat was united in marriage to Sharon A. Lewis. They later divorced. In 1979, he married Shirley K. McCormick, who preceded him in death. Pat was a faithful member of Holy Cross Parish.
Throughout his life, one of Pat’s greatest joys was restoring hot rod cars with his good friend, Gary Monroe, many of which won awards at various car shows. He also enjoyed traveling the country in an RV with Shirley, visiting nearly every state. Pat was also a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Pat is survived by his sons, Chad (Amy) McCormick and their three sons, Garenn, Patison, and Howie; Tim (Michelle) McCormick and their sons, Brady, Jacob and Jaylen; two daughters, Kristy (Dave) Logue and their children, Kasey (Stephanie), Nikole (Ryan), Tyler, and Taylor; and Katie (Ryan) Hanke and their two children, Jack and Brielle. He has one great-grandson, Duke. He is also survived by two brothers, John and Jim; sister, Kathy Shaw; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Judge Lawrence and Minnie McCormick; wife, Shirley K. McCormick; sons, Matthew and infant son, Joseph; brother, Mike McCormick; sister, Jeanette; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his former wife and the mother of his four sons, Sharon Krueger.
The family requests that any memorials be directed to the Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association (HADSA) in honor of their grandson, Brady.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Brady McCormick and Howard Gerlach for their regular phone calls, steady support, and kindness during Dad’s move to North Carolina and throughout his long journey with dementia.
