Orville T. Thiele, 90 of Sioux City passed away Friday, November 17, 2023. A memorial service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 25, 2023 at First Lutheran Church. Visitation with family present will be one hour prior to the service time at the church. Burial will be at a later date at Logan Park Cemetery.

Orville was born the son of Herman and Amber (Rhead) Thiele on September 19, 1933 in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Central High School in 1951. Following graduation, he honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corp. until his honorable discharge in 1959. Orville married Roberta Watterson on September 19, 1953 in Sioux City. They traveled around the country during Orville’s military service, making stops in California, Ohio, and North Carolina, before settling in Sioux City.

Orville started with the Sioux City Fire Department in 1963. He served as the Incident Commander for the Flight 232 tragedy in 1989. He retired as Assistant Chief in 1995 after 32 years of service. He also worked part time installing Gerkin windows for many years.

Orville enjoyed spending winters in Arizona with Roberta. In his younger years, he was a Golden Gloves Champion with the Boys Club. He continued to box during his military service.

Orville is survived by his wife, Roberta Thiele of Sioux City; children, Alan (Earlize) Thiele of Sioux City, IA, Beth (Marty) Thiele of McCook Lake, SD, Mark (Ellen) Thiele of Gilbert, AZ, and Brian (Julie) Thiele of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Al and Don.
