Molliann Faith Heikes, 92, of Dakota City, Nebraska, passed away, peacefully in her sleep on February 10th, 2024. There will be a celebration of life service at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Salem Lutheran Church, Dakota City. Those who wish to share stories or visit with her daughters may do so at Molliann’s home this week. Mohr & Becker Hunt Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Molliann was born on July 3, 1931 to William and Bess Gilfert in Emerson, Nebraska. After graduating from Emerson High School in 1948, Molliann landed her first job at the Rural Electrification Office in Emerson. After a year, she took a position with Grandy-Pratt Insurance company and moved to Sioux City, Iowa. She worked there almost 2 years, before beginning her work as a dental assistant.
In 1955, she met Allen Heikes, and they wed in 1957. The couple moved to Dakota City and Molliann’s vocation became being a devoted wife and mother. She worked alongside her husband for 40 years operating their potato farm and greenhouse. They had 4 children: Lance, Lori, Lona, and Leah.
Molliann was never one to sit still. Once the family farm ceased operation, in her 70’s, she began a full-time job caring for plants and people at Southdale Garden Center. She worked there until the fall of 2022. She was a favorite of customers, who loved talking with her about her love of flowers and Jesus. Passionate about her family and her faith, she was an avid volunteer for many organizations dedicated to sharing God’s love. She taught Sunday School and was actively involved with Siouxland Youth for Christ, Teens Encounter Christ, and Bible Study Fellowship. Molliann went on several mission trips to a small village in Mexico to help build a church there. She was a devoted advocate for Jesus until the Lord called her home.
In lieu of flowers, (Yes, we realize it's weird that the flower lady did not want flowers, but she was insistent.) the family requests that donations be made to Salem Lutheran Church or Siouxland Youth For Christ or Siouxland Teens Encounter Christ and notes are sent to the family C/O Leah McCrystal.
Molliann is survived by her daughters: Lori (Bill) Shelly of Littleton, Colorado, Lona (Eric) Pinkall of Gretna, Nebraska, and Leah (Jim) McCrystal of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; grandchildren: Morgan and Paige Shelly, Cristina McCrystal, Colton and Sierra McCrystal, Lance Pinkall, Allison Pinkall, and Luke Pinkall and great grandchildren: Olive and Poppy Shelly and Elsie McCrystal.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Heikes; her son, Lance Heikes; and a grandson, Taylor Shelly.
