Michael T. Miller, 69, of Sioux City, died on Thursday, June 25, 2026, surrounded by his family, after a valiant battle with cancer. 

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Holy Cross Parish, St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City. The family will greet friends from 5:00–7:00 p.m., followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the church, with a luncheon immediately following. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements.

Mike was born to George and Mary Lou (Cussen) Miller, on July 5, 1956, in Sioux City, Iowa. He grew up on West 2nd Street, where he said he had the best childhood; playing with his siblings, cousins, and all of the neighborhood kids at Lyons Park. 

Mike attended St. Boniface Grade School and Heelan High School, graduating in 1975. It was there he developed his love of the game of football. Mike went on to play football at the University of South Dakota as a center and long snapper. He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He followed his father and grandfather into a career working at the Sioux City Post Office for over 37 years, starting as a clerk, then letter carrier, and moving into management where he held various positions. He was proud to work for the USPS and more importantly felt privileged to work with so many wonderful people over his years. After retirement from the Post Office, Mike went to work at Meyer Brothers Funeral Homes for his longtime friend Dale Meyer. He was a true “jack of all trades” doing whatever was needed to keep the facilities looking pristine and serving families with dignity and respect for twelve years. He considered it such a honor to help people at a difficult time in their lives. 

Mike married his beloved wife, Mary Berens on August 19, 1983, at St. Boniface Church. They were blessed to have almost 43 years together filled with love, laughter and countless fun times with family and wonderful friends. 

Mike was a faith-filled man. Daily prayer was always a part of his life. He was a devout Catholic and member of Holy Cross St. Michael Parish, where he also served on the school board for many years. He spearheaded many school improvement projects there, as he always felt it was our job to leave the school better than it was when we came. He coached Catholic grade school football and girls volleyball for many years. 

Mike was a member of the National Association of Postal Supervisors Union, the Coyote Brotherhood, and a volunteer at Trinity Heights where he served on the board there for many years. 

Mike’s proudest accomplishment in life were his two children, Ross and Lindsey. His greatest joy was being Papa to Ryan, Madison, Mia, Mikey, and a new baby Schindler due in November. 

His hobbies were pushing his grandkids on the swings at local parks for years, telling them stories, sitting at the table coloring and talking with them, playing catch with a football in the front yard, and cheering them on at every activity. He also loved spectator sports and followed the USD Coyotes and ISU Cyclones! 

Mike is survived by his wife; his children: Ross (Kristen) Miller and Lindsey (Peter) Schindler; his grandchildren: Ryan and Madison Miller and Mia and Michael Schindler; siblings: Jim (Kay) Miller of Minneapolis MN, Diane (Bruce) Kingsbury of Ames IA, Susan Dupree of Dallas TX; brothers-in-law: Mike Berens, Tim (Anne) Berens, Tom Berens (Teresa Hermanstorfer), Pat Berens, and Jim Berens; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly, and his beloved uncle, Don Miller of Sioux City. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law: Wayne and Marge Berens; sisters-in-law: Patti Berens and Veronica Berens; and his brother-in-law, Gail Dupree. 

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Heights Queen of Peace Maintenance Fund or the Carmelite Nuns. 

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Ben Teply, Dr. Mel Teply, Kristen Boyle APRN, and Dr. Michael Jung for their excellent care of Mike. 

Mike never met a stranger he couldn’t talk to and find some common ground with, and they came from every walk of life. He treated everyone like they were his neighbor.
