Michael R. Larson, 93, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on May 20, 2026. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a devoted servant of his faith and community.
Born on July 15, 1932, Michael was a graduate of Bishop Heelan High School class of 1950. He married his beloved wife, Julie Ann Schunk, on September 26, 1953, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City, Iowa. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, after which he earned his business degree from Morningside College. In 1961, he began a distinguished career with the Sioux City Police Department, serving the citizens of Sioux City with honor and dedication for 30 years, before retiring in 1991 at the rank of Lieutenant in charge of the investigation division.
Michael was a faithful member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church, where he generously gave of his time assisting with daily mass and helping with collections. Together, Michael and his wife Julie were active participants in the RCIA program, accompanying and supporting those entering the Catholic faith. Michael was on the board at Trinity Queen of Peace, where they also devoted their time to maintaining the grounds and participating in prayer devotion.
Michael’s faith was not only a personal conviction but a cornerstone of the family he and his beloved wife built together. With steadfast devotion, they raised their children on the enduring values of faith, love, respect, and the importance of family.
Michael was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Julie Ann Schunk Larson, who passed away in 1998, and by his grandson, Joshua Ingrum, who passed in 2024.
Michael is survived by his sister, Linda White, and children: Kathleen Babe, Anthony Larson, Roxanne Larson (Katie Cole), Theresa Ingrum (Jeff Ingrum), Kerry Gangestad (Dean Gangestad), Daniel Larson, and Timothy Larson; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Lives well-lived, Michael and Julie leave behind a legacy of service, faith and love that will endure in the hearts of all who loved them.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the family greeting friends starting at 5 p.m. A Rosary Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church with burial following at Calvary Cemetery. Following the burial, a luncheon and time of fellowship will be held in the Cathedral Church Parish Hall. Memorial donations can be made to: Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church or Trinity Heights Queen of Peace.
