Merle William Hanslip, 94, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Merle was born on April 8, 1932, in Fremont, Nebraska, to Fred and Lydia (Wallingford) Hanslip. During his younger years, Merle and his family lived in several communities throughout Nebraska and Iowa as they moved from farm to farm. After graduating from high school, Merle proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged following his service.
On February 24, 1963, Merle was united in marriage to Rosemary (Hammer) in Sioux City. Together, they built a loving home and raised their four children. Merle and Rosemary remained devoted to their family and made Sioux City their home throughout their married life.
Over the years, Merle held a variety of jobs before beginning his longtime career in maintenance for the City of Sioux City. He took great pride in his work and continued until a health issue eventually forced him to retire.
Merle enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved hunting and fishing, listening to country music, and watching Western movies and television shows. He was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed following his favorite team. Above all, Merle cherished spending time with people. He had a lovable, giving, and humorous personality and could easily strike up a conversation with just about anyone. His kindness, good humor, and genuine interest in others will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Merle is survived by his children, Debby (Todd) Michael of Underwood, Iowa; Randy Hanslip of Sioux City; Julie Hanslip of Sioux City; and Russ (Maria) Hanslip of Annapolis, Maryland; six grandchildren, Amber (Cory) Martin, Megan Michael, Alex Michael, Jacob (Brittany) Hanslip, Paul Hanslip, and Kimberly Villatoro; five great-grandchildren, Kinlee, Cooper, and Emersyn Hanslip, Parker Martin, and a baby Martin expected in October; one sister, Kathleen Thacker; and numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Rosemary; and his siblings, Corrine (Alvin) Schwanke, Drucella (Dale) Hammer, Harold (LaVerne) Hanslip, Gearl (Mary) Hanslip, and Floyd (Ethel) Hanslip.
A memorial service celebrating Merle’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with Pastor Randy Rasmussen officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Private burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery.
