Melvin Lyle Thompson

February 6, 1940 — April 30, 2023

Melvin Lyle Thompson, 83, of Omaha, NE passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at his daughter’s home in Sioux City, IA following a brief illness.

Abiding by his wishes, cremation will take place and no services are planned at this time. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel assisted with his arrangements.

Melvin Lyle Thompson, the son of Melvin James and Wilma "Billie" (Vom Weg) Thompson, was born February 6, 1940 in Omaha, NE. Melvin grew up in Omaha and graduated from South High School in 1958. After high school, he followed in the footsteps of his uncle and brother and became a plumber. In 1965 Melvin was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. When he returned home, he resumed plumbing and was a 50+ year member of the Plumbers Local Union 16 in Omaha.  Melvin’s hobbies centered around sports. He was a statistics guy and enjoyed the challenge of tracking statistics on sports, especially horse racing and football. During the horse racing season he could always be found at Aksarben watching live racing when not at work and once Aksarben closed down he would go to Horseman's Park. He was an avid football enthusiast and would watch 3 games simultaneously while listening to a 4th on the radio.  He also enjoyed watching basketball, boxing and other sports during the off seasons of football and horse racing. He loved dogs.  When he was 9 years old, he used his first paycheck from delivering the Omaha World Herald to buy his first dog Boots. During his retirement years he enjoyed walking his dogs and socializing with his neighbors while out. He was a supporter of women's rights because he loved his daughter and two granddaughters and wanted them to have every opportunity to succeed and be treated fairly. He was loved and is greatly missed.

He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Roberts (Dan) of Sioux City; two grandchildren: Melanie Morrow of Hinton, IA and Maggie Pitt of Omaha, NE; two brothers: Jerry Thompson of Wickenburg, AZ and Jim Thompson (Cindy) of Springfield, NE; three sisters: Janice Podoll (Dean) of Omaha, NE, Barbara Archer (Gary) of Papillion, NE and Kathy Thompson (Rob Rea) of Bennington, NE; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents and one sister, Joyce Klucas.
