Mary Jo Phipps (née McAleer), 89, passed away on August 1, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Born on December 19, 1936, in Sioux City, Iowa, Mary Jo spent her life anchored by her deep faith and a steadfast devotion to her family.

A Registered Nurse for 45 years, she served her community through her work at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital (later Mercy Medical Center) and Hospice of Siouxland, as well as through various volunteer organizations. She was a devout Catholic who actively lived her faith as a member of the church choir, a lector at mass, and dependable prayer warrior for those around her.

Family was central to Mary Jo’s life. She was a dedicated wife and mother who never missed her children's activities and took great pride in raising them. In her free time, she loved playing bridge with friends, crocheting blankets for her children and grandchildren, and gathering her loved ones together.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Phipps; her son, Randall Phipps; and her sister, Ann Leigh.

Mary Jo was a loving mother to her children Dennis, Brian, Pamela, Kevin, and Laura. A grandmother whose legacy will live on through her 13 grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren, and 4 great- great- grandchildren. She was a beloved sister to Daniel McAleer and Loretta Guthrie, and cherished her extended family, including sister-in-law Nancy Langley and brother-in-law Gary Leigh.

Services

Visitation: Friday, August 14, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM (Prayer service at 7:00 PM) at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd, Sioux City, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial: Saturday August 15, at 10:00 AM at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 703 W 5th St, Sioux City, IA.
