Mary Jean Leinart

June 12, 1927 — November 24, 2022

Mary Jean Leinart, 95 of South Sioux City, formerly of Macy, Nebraska passed away Thursday, November 24, 2022. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Walthill, Nebraska.  

Mary was born the daughter of George and Iona (Huff) Mitchell on June 12, 1927, in Walthill, Nebraska. She graduated from Macy High School in 1944, and then completed her teaching certification at Wayne State College. Following graduation, Mary taught in two one-room schoolhouses in the Walthill area. She then moved to Seattle, Washington to work for Boeing during World War II.

On November 27, 1947, she married Cecil Leinart in Seattle. After marrying, Mary and Cecil moved back to Nebraska where they lived and farmed together for more than 50 years.

Mary enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking (especially her iconic cinnamon rolls), canning, playing cards, volunteering at her church, and spending time with her friends and family. Time with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter was precious to her. 

She was a life-long active member of the First Reformed Church in Macy. There she taught Sunday school for many years, as well as volunteered for many church activities. She also regularly volunteered to work on the Thurston County election board.

Mary is survived by her sons, Arlen (Carla) Leinart of South Sioux City and Kevin (Sara) Leinart of Dakota City; brother, Wayne (Elaine) Mitchell; grandchildren, Julie Leinart Thernes, Justin Leinart, Megan Leinart, and David (Terissa) Leinart; great-granddaughter, Kinley; and sister-in-law, Grace Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cecil; brothers, Kenneth (Helen) Ogden, Walt Mitchell, and Dale (Connie) Mitchell; and sister Alice (Lyle) Storm.
