Mary E. Young, 85, of Dakota City passed away on Monday, May 13, 2024 at her residence. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Jackson. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the church, with a Rosary and Vigil Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery in South Sioux City. Mary was born on June 15, 1938 in Hartington, Nebraska, the sixth of twelve children born to Elmo and Florence (Koch) Dreesen.
On June 16, 1954 Mary wed Gerald Hegge in Hartington, Nebraska. Gerald passed away on March 1, 1960 in Pierre, South Dakota. She later met and married Charles Young on August 20, 1962 in Dakota City. The two shared 56 years of married before Charles passed away on February 20, 2019.
Faith was a huge priority in Mary’s life. In her earlier years, she was a Eucharistic Minister and delivered Communion to the shut-ins and nursing home residents. She also spent years as a lector for St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and led the rosary for over 20 years.
In her free time, Mary enjoyed camping and spending winters in Arizona with Charles. She enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in various sporting events.
She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Young (Lucy Padilla) of Albuquerque, NM; sons: Gordon Hegge (Suzanne) of Jackson, NE, and Randy Hegge (Tami) of Jackson, NE; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; sisters: Helen Heikes (Alan), Linda Schrempp (Lonnie), and Janice Tuttle.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald Hegge; husband, Charles Young; son, Chuck Young; brothers: Robert Dreesen, Richard Dreesen (Wanda), and Edwin Dreesen; sisters: Lorraine Harbeck, Bernadine Davis, Marlene Kalin (Duane), Phyliss Vettle, Karen Arndt (Roger); and a brother-in-law, Jim Tuttle.
