Mary Jane Burton

  Mary Jane (Janie) Burton, 75, of Sioux City passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 28, 2023 at Westwood Rehabilitation Center after her four month battle with cancer.

  Janie was born on December 16, 1947 in Sioux City, Iowa to Harold and Mary Donna (Topf) Charlson. She graduated from Bishop Heelan High School. She went on to get her associates degree in nursing at Western Iowa Technical School and cared for patients in hospitals, nursing homes and outpatient clinics for 25 years. Before retiring Janie worked in customer service.            

  Janie was married to K. David Burton for 15 years and brought four children into the world. She dedicated her life to her children, living in Omaha, Nebraska and Grand Rapids, MI before returning to Sioux City. Janie will be remembered for her devout faith, levity of spirit and joyful laughter. She was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Parish. She enjoyed daily mass and sharing her life of prayer with her community.

  Janie is survived by her children Ann Burton of Philadelphia, PA, Daniel Burton of Knoxville, TN, Nicholas Burton of Knoxville, TN and Michael (Kandace) Burton of Brandenburg, KY, 6 grandchildren, brother Robert (Kathy) Charlson of Sioux City, brother Don (Amy) Charlson of Rochester, MN and sister Anita (Pat) Cooper of Olathe, KS, 10 nieces and nephews and dear friends Andy and Catherine Shell.

  Preceding her in death are her parents Harold and Mary Donna Charlson, brother Alan Charlson and baby brother Richie Charlson.

  A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be Friday evening at Blessed Sacrament from 5 – 7 pm and a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

  Pallbearers will be Nicholas Burton, Jr., Michael Burton, Nicholas Burton, Sr., Donald Charlson, Robert Charlson and Patric Cooper.
