Mary Ann Burg

April 22, 1931 — March 9, 2024

Sioux City, IA

  Memorial service for Mary Ann (Sprowls) Burg, 92, will be Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Calvary Lutheran Church officiated by Pastor James Travis.  Visitation will be Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at 5:00-7:00 PM at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. The memorial service will be livestreamed at facebook.com/calvaryleeds. 

 

  Mary Ann was born April 22,1931 in Sioux City, IA to Carl and Minnie (Spomer) Sprowls and went to be with Jesus Saturday, March 9, 2024, at home after a short illness.  

 

  She married Albert Burg on April 15, 1951, at Calvary Lutheran Church.

 

  Mary Ann graduated from Leeds High School in 1949.  She represented Sioux City at Hawkeye Girls’ State the summer before her senior year. After high school, Mary Ann began nursing school at Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1952, twenty-four years after her mother had graduated from the same institution, making them the first mother and daughter to graduate from Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing. It was during her nursing education that Mary Ann married her high school sweetheart, Al Burg.  She was the first student to be allowed to be married while in nurses’ training.  

 

  After graduating and passing her State Boards with the highest scores ever recorded in the state, Mary Ann began working in pediatrics at Lutheran Hospital.  She went on to work for Siouxland District Health from 1970-1990. 

 

  Mary Ann was a lifelong member of Calvary Lutheran Church where she was a member of Ruth’s Circle and served as a member of Calvary’s Women’s League.   

 

  Mary Ann was also a board member of the Woodbury County Community Action Agency.

 

  Mary Ann was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan who was able to attend a number of basketball and football games and in her later years never missed a game on TV.  She enjoyed gardening, bowling, golfing, hosting card parties, reading, and doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles.   She loved watching old westerns.  Her passion was supporting her children and grandchildren in their activities.   

 

   She is survived by sons- Doug (Lisa) Burg, Orange City, IA; grandchildren-Maria Plueger, Isaac (Aimée) Plueger, Tessa (Fiancé- Tim Huffman), Sera, Abe, and Anton Burg.   Roger (Pam) Burg, Kemmerer, WY; grandchildren- Ryan Pawlowski, Wynne Burg, and Alec (Mickayla) Burg; great grandchildren- Claire, Jackson, and Luke Pawlowski, Quinten and Caspen Burg.  Bruce (Cindy) Burg, Louisville, CO; grandchildren- Nathan (Frances Bell) Burg, Brenden (Kandis) Burg, and Caitlin Burg; great grandchildren- Evelyn Burg and Raylan Burg.   Daughters- Jayna (Jeff) Woolridge, Sioux City, IA; grandson- Connor Woolridge, Jan (Patrick) Griffin, Hennessey OK; grandchildren- Zachary (Sarah) Griffin, Callyn and Cameron Griffin, great grandchildren- Emilia and Samuel Griffin. Sisters-in-law- Myrna Burg, Mauston, WI and Jean Sprowls, Rockledge, FL, and numerous adored nieces and nephews.


  Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Al; brother, Retired US Army Lt. Col. Leigh R. Sprowls; brother-in-law, George Burg; sister-in-law, Charlotte “Chang” Akeson, nephew, Doug Sprowls, and infant grandsons, Brett Michael Burg and Christian Griffin.

 

  Memorial Donations can be made in her name to St. Luke’s School of Nursing.
