Laurel, Nebraska

Mary Ann (Voss) Lewon, 86 of Laurel, Nebraska, formerly of Newcastle and Wynot, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Hillcrest Care Center.  Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2024 at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Joyce Cook officiating.   Visitation, with the family present, will be one hour prior to services at the church.  Interment will follow at the Newcastle City Cemetery.  Mohr Funeral Home of Ponca is assisting the family.   Online condolences may be offered at www.meyerbroschapels.com

Mary Ann was born on a farm on March 8, 1938 in rural Newcastle, Nebraska to William V. “Bill” and Josephine M. (Grandgennett) Voss.  She received her education, and graduated from the Newcastle High School before going on to college.  Mary Ann married James “Jim” Lewon on December 1, 1956 in Newcastle at the Congregational United Church of Christ.  They farmed outside Newcastle for several years.  They sold the farm and moved to rural Wynot, Nebraska where they sold insurance and real estate, and she helped with Jim’s office work and bookkeeping, until their retirement.  

Mary Ann enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, helping people, gardening, and boating.  She loved to travel.  She went on several bus trips.  Mary Ann traveled with her husband Jim, in their camper, made several trips to the south.   Most of all, Mary Ann liked spending time with her family, her grandkids, and great-grandkids.  She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Ponca, Nebraska and confirmed at the Congregational Church in Newcastle.  She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Newcastle and Wynot and served on their voting boards.

Mary Ann is survived by her son Mark (Tammy) Lewon and their children Molly (Clayton) Bratcher and Ryan Lewon (grandkids Ashlynn and Leigha); daughter Charleen (Lathan) Detlefsen and their children Drew (Kayla) Detlefsen (grandkids Koby, Aliya, and Hannah), and son Justin (Mindee) Detlefsen (grandkids Cooper and Aubree); sister Janet Stolpe; sister-in-law Connie Voss; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim in 2000, brother Roger Voss, brothers-in-law Edward Lewon and Paul Stolpe, sisters-in-law Doris Hintz and Annie Lamprech, parents-in-law Fred and Sylva Lewon, along with several nieces and nephews.
