Martin J. Castor

August 25, 1949 — March 20, 2023

Martin J. Castor, 73, of South Sioux City, NE, passed away March 20, 2023 at Bickford Senior Living.  A memorial service will be held Friday, March 24th at 2:00 p.m. at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Online condolences may be made to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Martin was born on August 25, 1949 in Sioux City, IA to Karl and Viola (Livingston) Castor.  At a young age he started hanging out with friends and skipping school to go play pool.  When not playing pool, you could find them playing baseball in the Castor’s backyard.  He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1967 and went directly into the United States Army.  He started at the base in Olympia, WA, went onto Korea and was honorably discharged in Ft. Collins, CO.  After the Army, he started a lifetime of sales.  From Pots and pans cookware, to cemetery property at Memorial Park and onto Mullins Siding and Awnings where he retired.  Dementia snuck in to steal the last 12 years of his life.  He married Linda Michalek in 1982.  Their daughter Chanda was his pride and joy until his grandson Anthony was born.  He became gramps shadow, going pheasant hunting and finding the next burger place.  Chanda added more Grampa favorites: Aiden, Addison, AJ & Alivia.

He loved to hunt and stop by Bob’s Bar in Martinsberg for a burger and cheeseballs after.  He liked to listen to oldies and country music, car shows, movies, sports, especially the Chicago Cubs and Bulls and Nebraska Football, he also enjoyed watching Western movies.  He would always go out of his way to help a stranger and give away $20 to a kid like it was candy just to see them smile.  He was THE BEST OF THE BEST! Martin would go out of his way to help family or friends in need.  You could always find him at the Crystal Café or Hardee’s chatting with his buddies, especially back in the day at Carousal.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Linda Castor, South Sioux City, NE; daughter Chanda DeBuhr; grandchildren: Anthony (Bailey) Castor, Aiden, Addison, AJ Martin and Alivia; and great-granddaughter Kinsley; sisters: Charlotte Cart, Jean (Joe) Logan; brothers: Karl (Lisa), David (Kim), and John; and special lifetime friends: Mike Prosser and Dean Huges.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Charlotte and Mike for all the wonderful care they gave and to Hospice of Siouxland team members: Kayla, Tyler, Michelle and Chaplain Bob for their care to Martin and family; The Bickford Memory Care staff that has cared for Martin in the past 3 months.  Their end care staff was wonderful and many became very close at heart!  A very special thank you to Adella for her special prayers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Robyn Lieber at Sweet Like Honey at 109 Fairview Dr., South Sioux City, NE 68776.
