Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Omaha Valley Cemetery.
She was born on February 11, 1938 in a small house along the bluff road north of Homer. She was welcomed by her parents Lyle and Eleanor (Longwell) Young and older brother Darrell. She lived her entire childhood in Homer. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Homer. She graduated from Homer high school in 1956. She was a cheerleader, in the Jr/Sr play, played the clarinet in band and was a member of the girl’s choir. It was at Homer high that she met the love of her life, Robert Jacobsen. They married on June 21, 1957. They lived in Walthill for a few months before moving a home onto the Jacobsen farm south of Homer. It would be their home for the next 65 years.
Marilyn was an excellent typist and took flawless shorthand. She began her secretarial career working at the Thurston County Extension Office and The Bureau of Indian Affairs.
In 1961 she started working for Frank Mares President of the Homer State bank as his secretary and insurance clerk. She worked there until 1973 when daughter Jill was born. She became a stay at home mom and worked alongside Bob on the farm. She always raised a big garden in the summer and canned green beans, tomatoes and all sorts of pickles. She sewed most of her and Jill's clothes and always had an embroidery project going. After Jill went to school, she started working at Western Cartographers in Homer in 1980 as a map maker. She remained there for 32 years, retiring in 2012. Marilyn was a member of St Paul's Lutheran church in Homer. She was a member of Women's Circle and was a Sunday School teacher when Jill was young. After retirement, she served on both the kitchen funeral lunch committee and made fleece blankets. Marilyn loved to read, be in her kitchen and working in her garden and flower beds. Her and Bob had many camping adventures together and with family and friends. They enjoyed playing card games, having bonfires, going fishing and playing Wahoo!! She especially loved times spent with her family at holiday and birthday gatherings. Sam and Hannah were blessed to have a grandma that would sit and color with them, read a book, have a tea party, play a game, build a puzzle or take them on a camping/fishing trip.
Preceding Marilyn in death is her husband of 64 years, Bob Jacobsen; parents, Lyle and Eleanor Young; parents-in-law, Henry and Grace Jacobsen; brothers, Darrell and Tom Young and sister, Linda Roshchewski; brothers-in-law, Jack, Larry and Gerald Jacobsen and Fay Whitla; and sister-in-law, Donna Young.
