Maria Cristina Barajas

Maria Cristina Barajas, 67 of South Sioux City passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loved ones after a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, April 17, 2023 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in South Sioux City. Visitation will be Sunday, April 16, 2023 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Burial will be at St. Michael Cemetery.

Maria was born the daughter of Antonio and Maria del Refugio Martinez on July 24, 1955 in Calvillo, Ags. Mexico. She married Jose Soto in 1975. Jose passed away in 1987. Maria lived in Mexico until moving to South Sioux City in 1994. After moving to the United States she worked for IBP, La Juanita, BPI, and Curly Foods over the years until her health declined. She married Francisco Barajas in 2005. Francisco passed away in May of 2020.

One of her biggest joys was hosting get togethers for her family to enjoy her home cooked meals. She could spend hours outdoors working on her garden; she even won yard of the month in the summer of 2020. Before her husband passed, she enjoyed the road trips with him to her home town in Mexico.

Maria is survived by her children; Sandra Melgar (Alfonso), Jose Soto (Teresa), Carina Zermeño (Rolando), Maria Soto (Luis), Omar Soto, Isabel Soto (Noe). 

Stepchildren; Franky Barajas (Michelle), David Barajas

Grandchildren; Estela, Alexis, Airam, Gloria, Chris, Jennifer, Damian, Alexandra, Karina, Mauricio, Alexzander, Sofia, Paulina, Mateo, Emilia, Katia.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Jose and Francisco; two brothers and two sisters.
