Marguerite “Marg” Ann Chartier, 85, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2026. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Brad Pelzell as Celebrant. Cremation will follow with Interment of the cremains to be at a later date. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 7th from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel with a Vigil Service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Marg was born on December 6, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, to James “Tommy” Thompson and Marguerite (Townsend) Thompson. Her birth mother passed away during childbirth, and Marg spent her early years living with her Thompson grandparents in Des Moines. Her father later married Leona Klenke, and when Marg learned that Leona was expecting a baby, she chose to move in with her father and Leona. Leona lovingly welcomed Marg into their family and raised her as her own alongside the six children she and James had together. Marg’s baby brother, Pat, would always hold a special place in her heart and was forever her “baby.”
Because her father served in the Air Force, Marg lived in several different places before the family settled in Sioux City in 1952. Sioux City would become her home for the rest of her life.
Marg married James Chartier on July 2nd, 1960, and became a devoted mother to five children. She proudly embraced her role as a homemaker. Her family was the center of her world, and she spent her life making a home where everyone was welcome, cared for, and fed. She was a wonderful cook and loved sharing meals and time with the people she loved.
Marg will be remembered for her sweet, sassy, and kind personality. She loved music, camping, Hallmark movies and shows, and, of course, Tom Selleck. She especially adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and treasured the time she spent with them. Her family will remember her laughter, her strong personality, her generosity, and the many little things that made her uniquely Marg.
She is survived by her children, James (Mary) Chartier, Tom (Kelly) Chartier, Mary (Kim) Sawatzke, and Annie Chartier; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Pat (Nancy) Thompson, Mike (Marggie) Thompson, Kathleen Lee, Chuck (Staci) Thompson, and Dan (Marilee) Thompson, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Chartier; her eldest daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Arians; her birth mother, Marguerite Thompson; her father, James “Tommy” Thompson; her mother, Leona Thompson; and her brother and sister-in-law, Phil & Mary Pat Thompson.
Marg’s greatest legacy is the family she loved so deeply. She will be missed more than words can say and remembered always by the many people whose lives she touched.
