Margaret A. (Calhoun) (Haindfield) Hansen

Margaret (Calhoun) Hansen, 83, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2024, in Whiting, Iowa.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 14th from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, IA on Monday, April 15th at 10:30 A.M. Burial will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City.

Margaret was born on February 17, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Catherine (Dreves) Calhoun. She was a woman of many talents and passions throughout her life.

Margaret's journey was marked by accomplishments and contributions to both her family and community. After graduating from Heelan High School in Sioux City, she pursued her education further, first at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital X-Ray School in 1960 and later at Briar Cliff College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration in 1987.

In 1961, Margaret relocated to Sloan, IA, where she dedicated her life to raising six active children by designing ribbon-winning Halloween costumes, den-mothering Cub Scouts and Webelos, helping them manage their paper routes, attending school events, and not to mention instilling in them an appreciation for “walking beans.” Although initially a stay-at-home mother, Margaret transitioned to performing field work for local farmers before joining IBP in Quality Control until her retirement in 1994. Margaret married the love of her life, Wallace "Wally" Hansen on July 7, 1998, and together they embarked on entrepreneurial ventures by designing and installing closet systems for various companies like Bedquarters, Slumberland, and Closet Factory of Omaha.

Margaret's generosity and attention to detail shone through in her hobbies. She enjoyed making and serving baked goods and desserts to family and friends--and even appliance repairmen. Woodworking, wood refinishing, and other do-it-yourself projects demonstrated not only her love of craftsmanship but also her desire to pursue hobbies that were generally reserved for men.

Beyond her professional accomplishments and hobbies, Margaret was actively involved in various organizations that held great importance to her. She was a member of Toastmasters, and served as an officer in the Parents Club of St. Joseph School and as a Precinct Representative for the Iowa Republican Party. Additionally, both Margaret and Wally hosted new members to the Catholic faith in the Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for 23 years.

Margaret is survived by her children: Craig (Di) Haindfield of Sergeant Bluff, IA; Brian Haindfield of Sioux Falls, SD; Christine (Wayne) Hasek of Fairmont, MN; Michele (Mitchell) Haindfield of Sammamish, WA; Thomas Haindfield of Omaha, NE; Marianne Rosenbaum of Phoenix, AZ; stepdaughters: Pam Lingle, Dea Featherston, Sheri Miller, Connie Skaff; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister Grace (Jim) Kavanaugh of Sioux City.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Wallace "Wally" Hansen and two brothers: Ray and Larry Calhoun.

May Margaret rest in peace knowing the impact she made on her children and on those around her.
