Margaret Ann “Babe” Hurowitz, 98, of Vermillion, SD, passed away Friday, May 23, 2025 in Sioux Falls, SD. Burial was held Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at Independent Farane in Sioux City, IA.

Margaret was born June 12, 1926 in Sioux City, the daughter of Jacob and Eva (Sherman) Mirkin. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1944. On June 22, 1947, she married Nate Hurowitz in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Vermillion, SD. Their marriage was a beautiful love affair which fostered love for each other and for their two children. They were married for 58 years until Nate’s passing in 2005.

Margaret and Nate owned and operated Piggly Wiggly Supermarket from 1954 to 1987 where they worked side by side. She was a dedicated member of Congregation Beth Shalom and a lifelong member of the Hadassah-Sisterhood. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter B.V., V.F.W. Auxiliary, and the American Cancer Society.

Margaret had many hobbies and interests. She enjoyed games such as Mahjong, Mexican Train, and played Bridge in a group. She cherished spending time with her friends. She was an exceptional cook and baker and was renowned for the theme parties she hosted along with Nate.

Margaret is survived by her children Scott (Deborah “Debbie”) Hurowitz and Lori Hurowitz who was her caretaker for the last 20 years where they developed a very special bond.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband (Nate), parents, and four brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Congregation Beth Shalom, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association.
